Nordic walking is becoming an increasingly popular activity. The concept originated in Finland in 1930as a summer exercise for the national cross country skiing team. The use of the specially designed poles has many similarities to cross country skiing and exercises the same muscles.

A walking group has many benefits, both for physical and mental health, and Nordic walking uses up to 90% of body muscles when done correctly, thus providing a good gentle workout, especially beneficial for the over 50s.

Our group meets twice a week. Monday afternoon we walk about 4 miles on various routes depending on the weather and usually finish about 4pm. On Wednesday we have a shorter walk up to 2 miles for the less mobile and try to avoid too many stiles and hills!

Leading the group are two trained Nordic Walk instructors and one walk leader, so we are able to give instruction in the correct use of the poles. We have a supply of poles to use for the walks if needed. All you need is a sense of humour and walking shoes!
