When “I Hate Running” Turns Into “I Can Do This”

At Bridges, we often talk about community. Sometimes it looks like organised support, sometimes it’s planned activity… and sometimes it’s something much simpler.

Sometimes, it’s just someone in a t-shirt a few steps ahead of you.

This weekend, Nadine Lewis (Bridges Befriending Coordinator) took part in Lydney parkrun. By her own admission, she’s really new to running — and if she’s being completely honest, she doesn’t even like it all that much. But like many people, she’s pushing herself to get fitter and healthier.

Halfway through the run, things got tough. Really tough.

“I was on my second mile and I wanted to stop and give up.”

And then she spotted something familiar just ahead — a Team Bridges t-shirt.

It was Mark Walton, chair of Bridges Trustees.

He didn’t know she was there. There was no conversation, no encouragement shouted back over a shoulder. But from that moment on, Nadine made a decision:

She was going to stick with him.

Step by step, she followed his pace. And just like that, what felt impossible became manageable.

“I thought, if Mark can do this — and he’s just a few years older than me — then I can.”

And she did.

Mark crossed the line just a few seconds ahead. Nadine could have pushed to overtake, but chose not to — it didn’t feel right after he’d unknowingly carried her through the hardest part of the run. Because that’s what this was.

Support.

Even if he didn’t realise it at the time.

The Power of Just Being There

Afterwards, Nadine shared a simple message:

“Mark wouldn’t believe how helpful it was that he was there at the right time… so a massive thank you. You helped me so, so much without even knowing it. Team Bridges right there.”

And that really says it all.

At Bridges, we don’t just deliver services — we create moments like this. Moments where people feel encouraged, supported, and part of something bigger, even in the smallest, most unexpected ways.

Whether it’s through a project, a conversation, or just a familiar face in a t-shirt on a tough second mile…

That’s what community looks like.

If Nadine’s story has got you thinking “maybe I could give this a go…” — you’re not alone.

Whether you love running or are firmly in the “I hate this but I’m trying anyway” camp, Team Bridges is all about showing up, supporting each other, and getting to the finish line together.

This September, we’re heading to the Ross 5k & 10k, and we’d love you to be part of it.

No pressure. No expectations. Just a brilliant community, a shared goal, and plenty of encouragement along the way.
