Bridges Community Car Scheme

🚗 Bridges Community Car Scheme

Getting out and about shouldn’t be a challenge.

The Bridges Community Car Scheme provides friendly, flexible, door-to-door transport for people who need a little extra support travelling to appointments, shops or social activities across Monmouthshire and Blaenau Gwent.

We’re more than a taxi service. Our volunteer drivers offer practical help and genuine companionship — it’s more like a lift from a trusted friend.

Where We Can Take You

Our service helps people stay independent and connected to their community. Journeys might include:

  • Shopping trips

  • Medical and hospital appointments

  • Social groups and activities

  • Visiting friends and family

Where appropriate, drivers can:

  • Help you in and out of the car

  • Accompany you into shops

  • Wait during appointments

  • Offer steady, reassuring support if you have mobility difficulties

Every journey is arranged with care, understanding that everyone’s needs are different.

How the Car Scheme Works

Our service runs thanks to dedicated local volunteers who use their own vehicles to provide transport.

To make the scheme sustainable:

  • Drivers volunteer their time

  • We charge a fixed mileage rate to cover running costs

  • The cost of your journey is confirmed at the time of booking

Before driving with us, all volunteers must:

  • Provide valid driving licence, MOT and insurance documents

  • Complete a DBS check

  • Undertake appropriate training to ensure passenger safety and confidence

Joining the Scheme

All passengers complete a simple registration form so we can understand any individual needs or mobility requirements.

A Car Scheme Co-ordinator will arrange a home visit before your first journey. This allows us to:

  • Explain how the scheme works

  • Answer any questions

  • Ensure we match you with the right driver

Our priority is to provide safe, reliable and compassionate transport that supports independence and wellbeing.
