Befriending Scheme

🤝 Bridges Befriending

Befriending is one of the simplest ways to improve wellbeing — a regular visit, a shared conversation, a friendly face at the door.

Bridges Befriending Scheme connects trained local volunteers with older people across Monmouthshire who would benefit from companionship and connection. A visit might mean a cup of tea and a chat, a short walk, sharing stories, or simply spending time together.

Our coordinators take care to get to know everyone involved. We thoughtfully match volunteers and participants based on shared interests, experiences and personality — because the best befriending relationships feel natural, not formal.

Who Can Receive Support?

We support people aged 65 and over who are experiencing social isolation or loneliness.

Isolation can happen for many reasons — bereavement, illness, reduced mobility, family living further away, or life simply becoming quieter. Whatever the reason, regular companionship can make a meaningful difference.

Our aim is simple: to provide consistent, friendly contact that improves confidence, wellbeing and connection to the community.

How to Access the Service

Volunteer with Us

Befriending is powered by volunteers — and we are always delighted to welcome new people.

Giving just a small amount of time each week can have a lasting impact on someone’s wellbeing. But it’s not one-sided. Many of our volunteers tell us they gain just as much as they give — friendship, purpose, confidence and a sense of belonging.

We provide:

  • Full training before you begin
  • Ongoing support from our coordinators
  • Flexible opportunities to fit around your lifestyle

Volunteering is a meaningful way to meet new people, develop skills and contribute to your community in a way that truly matters.

Bridges Befriending runs on ‘volunteer power’ …we always welcome new volunteers! Volunteering is a great way of meeting new people and learning new skills through doing something worthwhile. Volunteering can also help build confidence and gain access to training or employment. A small amount of volunteer time given can make a big difference to someone who needs a little company or help to remain independent and connected.
