Bridges Centre
We wanted to share an update with our community about the future reopening of the Bridges Centre and what the coming months may look like.
We have recently been advised that there is a possibility for a partial reopening in the autumn, with a full reopening currently planned for spring 2027. Externally the building may look relatively unscathed; internally however the damage is extensive. We know that this will come as disappointing news to many people who care deeply about the Bridges Centre and the role it plays in our community. We feel that disappointment too.
The timeline reflects the realities of working with a building like ours. As a Grade II* listed building, the Bridges Centre requires all repair and refurbishment work to be carried out with great care and sensitivity. This means using appropriate methods, materials, and specialist expertise to ensure the building’s historic character is protected for future generations. While this careful approach inevitably takes longer, it is essential to safeguarding the Centre’s long-term future.
Although progress may feel slower than we would all like, this work is an important investment in the Bridges Centre as a safe, welcoming, and sustainable space for years to come. We are continuing to work closely with partners, specialists, and supporters to move things forward as efficiently and responsibly as possible.
What Happens Next
Over the coming months, our focus will be on progressing the necessary works in a way that respects the building and supports a sustainable reopening.
We will continue to work with our insurers, specialist contractors and advisors to finalise plans for the required repairs, ensuring that all work meets the standards expected for a Grade II listed building.
At the same time, we will be exploring what a partial reopening in the autumn could look like in practice, including which spaces and activities may be able to return first. Any reopening will be guided by safety, accessibility, and the best possible use of the building during this phase.
We are continuing to investigate the possibility of allowing some services back onto the first floor of the building sooner than the timescales above. We will update you again when we understand the feasibility of doing so.
We will also remain in close dialogue with partners, funders, and the wider community as plans develop. Regular updates will be shared through our newsletter, website, and social media so everyone can stay informed.
Most importantly, we will continue to advocate for the long-term future of the Bridges Centre and work towards a full reopening in spring 2027, when we hope to welcome everyone back into the building.
