About Bridges

Connection. Support. Community.

Everyone needs connection. For some, it is companionship. For others, it is practical help, confidence-building or simply knowing someone is there.

Established in 1984, Bridges is an independent charity working to strengthen wellbeing and reduce isolation across Monmouthshire. For over four decades, we have supported older people, rurally isolated residents, young adults with additional needs, people with mobility challenges and those facing economic hardship.

Our work is rooted in community. While many know us through our Monmouth hub at Drybridge House, our impact reaches far beyond one building — through outreach services, volunteer networks and partnerships that support people where they are.

Our Mission

Our mission is to enhance wellbeing by creating opportunities for connection, support and participation.

We do this by:

  • Reducing loneliness and social isolation

  • Providing practical services that enable independent living

  • Offering welcoming spaces for social interaction and support

  • Encouraging volunteering and community contribution

  • Partnering with local organisations to respond to changing need

We believe that small acts of connection can have lasting impact.

Our Values

Everything we do is guided by:

Compassion – We approach our work with empathy and kindness.
Integrity – We operate transparently and responsibly.
Inclusion – We welcome people of all ages and backgrounds.
Community – We believe in the strength of local people supporting one another.
Resilience – We adapt, evolve and remain committed through challenge and change.

Our Impact

Each year, Bridges:

  • Hosts more than 60 regular activities and support groups

  • Provides practical services that enable independence and dignity

  • Supports bereavement groups, health services and community-led initiatives

  • Works alongside local partners to strengthen preventative wellbeing

  • Creates opportunities for volunteering and skill-building

Behind every number is a person — a friendship formed, confidence rebuilt, isolation reduced.

We also play a vital role in supporting community infrastructure, providing space for charities, self-help groups, health professionals and community organisations to deliver their work locally.

Enterprise & Community Workspace

As part of our commitment to strengthening local resilience, Bridges also provides affordable workspace and room hire for small businesses, start-ups, freelancers and community organisations.

By offering flexible desk space, permanent occupancy and meeting rooms, we help create an accessible base for enterprise and collaboration. Income generated through workspace supports the sustainability of our charitable services, ensuring that community support and economic activity strengthen one another.

This blended approach reflects our belief that thriving communities are built on both social connection and local opportunity.

Our History

Bridges was founded in 1984 in response to local need, with a simple aim: to bring people together and provide practical support within the community.

Since 2003, Drybridge House — a 17th century Grade II listed building in Monmouth — has served as a base for much of our activity. The building is part of the town’s heritage, but it is the people within it who have always defined Bridges.

Over four decades, the organisation has grown and adapted to meet changing social challenges. From supporting older residents and carers to creating space for health services and community groups, Bridges has evolved while remaining true to its core purpose: connection.

Today, we continue that journey — building stronger, more resilient communities across Monmouthshire.

More Than a Place

Bridges is not just a building. It is a network of people, partnerships and possibility — working together to ensure no one feels alone.
